Most lemongrass teas in the Indian market are artificially flavoured green tea with lemongrass extract or lemongrass fragrance added at a processing stage. This is natural lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) blended with organic Himalayan green tea. The lemongrass you’re tasting in this cup comes from the actual plant, not a flavouring compound that approximates it.

  • Water temperature: 80°C. Slightly warmer than plain green tea to extract citral from the lemongrass.
  • Amount: 1 teaspoon per 200ml.
  • Steep time: 3–4 minutes. Over-steeping makes the green tea base more bitter.
  • Serve: Excellent hot or cold. As an iced tea, lemongrass green tea is particularly good bright, citrusy, refreshing.
  • With honey: A teaspoon of white honey added when the cup has cooled slightly complements the citrus beautifully.

No lemongrass, lemon peel, and lemon verbena are three different plants with similar citrusy aromatic profiles but different flavours and bioactive compound compositions. Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) has the most distinctly citral-dominant character of the three. Lemon peel is sharper and more bitter. Lemon verbena is softer and more floral. They are not interchangeable.
